«The Beast Behind» by Unbound

This is the first single released from Larken and Amanda Rose, under the name “Unbound”. It was made entirely in the “studio” located in the dining room of their apartment, using a Korg Kronos, various plug-ins from EastWest, and just a dash of real guitar. (The music for “The Beast Behind” was largely based on the oldest piece of music Larken Rose remembers writing, when he was a teenager, around 1980.)

On the screen a face comes into view
to warn us of danger.
A tone of urgency and panic breaks through
demanding we change our ways.

Sheltered from the dangers outside,
our lives so fragile.
Protected from the horrors
unknown, unseen.

Forever we are indebted to
the ones who keep us safe.
Ever wise and powerful,
deserving of our praise.

Yet something makes me wonder,
is there something more here?
Give me strength to open these eyes,
help me to see past the fear.

This terror they are selling,
flooding from the screens now,
Is it here reflected at all, in what we
can see with our own clear eyes?

It’s taken far too long for us to see
through the mask of a savior,
and to the beast behind.

Do we know by now where the true threat
lies?: the ones who insist we obey.
Do we know by now evil’s true face
when seen by light of day?

An endless series of hobgoblins
sent to scare us,
’til we beg for safety
and sell our souls

How many times will we fall for
this trick, and let them win?
How many times will we
invite the devil in?

A tyrant springs from one root:
playing a protector.
If we know we’ve nothing to fear,
there’s nothing for them to control.

All of their power comes from
feeding this illusion.
When we learn to see through the lies,
the demons will vanish before our eyes.

It’s taken far too long for us to see
through the mask of a savior,
and to the beast behind.

Do we know by now where the true threat
lies?: the ones who insist we obey.
Do we know by now evil’s true face,
when seen by light of day?

Finally, at last, we all can see
through the mask of a savior,
and to the beast behind.

Yes, we know by now where the true threat
lies: the ones who insist we obey.
Yes, we know by now evil’s true face
when seen by light of day.
